The South by Southwest conference in Austin has for the past few years been an annual reunion of sorts for us, and an opportunity to regroup and get inspired. In fact it was immediately after SXSW a few years ago that I left Sony to found Tiny Pictures. If you're not familiar with SXSW, there are three concurrent festivals: Music, Film, and Interactive, with the Interactive track recently outscaling the other two. In the organizers' words:
The SXSW Interactive Festival features five days of exciting panel content and amazing parties. Attracting digital creatives as well as visionary technology entrepreneurs, the event celebrates the best minds and the brightest personalities of emerging technology. Whether you are a hard-core geek, a dedicated content creator, a new media entrepreneur, or just someone who likes being around an extremely creative community, SXSW Interactive is for you!
What's particularly interesting about this conference is the way it's programmed: anyone interested in leading a panel or discussion can propose a topic, and the final panels are chosen in part based on feedback from the community. (You see where I'm going with this?)
We've proposed two topics for SXSW 2009.
Not Cool: Getting Youth Marketing Right
Marketing to young consumers is more challenging than ever. They understand the role of marketers and they know our game, sometimes better than we do. To succeed, brands must find ways to reach their consumers where it matters most: on their turf and on their terms.
If online advertising through the past decade has been defined by display and text ads, the Next Big Thing in brand-consumer interaction is content-driven and conversational. Or is it? Hear from social media services, brands, ad networks and agencies at the center of it all.
Both subjects are important to us, and together they drive many of the decisions we make with Radar. Have a look, and weigh in with your thoughts.
